These Biz Kids Know Best: 'Tis Better to Give than Receive

10,000 gifts.

If the power of a single young entrepreneur has ever been in question, the philanthropic impact of high schooler Julia Sora offers an answer. The entrepreneur founded her lip balm company, Zeal Cares, six years ago. Over the last six years, her “buy one, give one” model has given 10,000 lip balms to 10,000 childhood cancer patients across the country.

Julia’s business model reminds us of a number of other young entrepreneurs we’ve met over the years – Biz Kids who understand that while it may be “better to give than receive,” no one ever said you couldn’t do both at the same time.

Our two episodes, “Businesses that Give Back” and “Can Money Buy Happiness” each explore the less discussed facets of entrepreneurial life – the impact of a product or service, or the donated proceeds resulting from them. Here are just a few of our most memorable Biz Kids that give back:

Cymphonique

In an era when so many aspire to gain fame on social media, Cymphonique Miller is preaching a different message: “Don’t aspire to be like someone else, but aspire to be the best you that you can be.” Her advice doubles as the name of her company: Be Your Own You.

The Re-Entry Guide

Kamani's social enterprise publishes poetry and art, but its impact is much larger: empowering those whose lives have been impacted by incarceration.

Rachele Brooke Smith

Even a famous actress knows that fame is short-lived. But impacting others? That can last forever.
